There’s nothing quite like the cozy warmth of a homemade crumble on a chilly fall evening. With its golden, buttery topping and tender, spiced fruit beneath, a pear and apple crumble is the kind of dessert that feels like a hug from the inside. Easy to make, irresistibly delicious, and perfect for family gatherings, this crumble has been a staple in my kitchen for years.
For this recipe, I use about 10 pieces of fruit – a mix of apples and pears. Sweeten them to taste and add a couple of cloves for that hint of fall spice. The crumble topping is simple. Twice as much flour as butter, plus a spoonful or two of sugar for a light, crunchy finish.
How to Make It:
- Prepare the fruit: Peel, core, and slice the apples and pears. Cook them gently in a pan with a splash of water, sugar to taste, and the cloves until they are soft and fragrant.
- Make the crumble: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour with butter cut into small cubes. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour with light, quick movements until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in a couple of spoons of sugar.
- Assemble and bake: Transfer the cooked fruit into a baking dish and sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit. Bake in a medium to hot oven until the topping is golden brown. Serve warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of custard if you like.
This pear and apple crumble is more than just a dessert; it’s a core, family memory. Over the years of raising my children and feeding our family, I’ve lost count of how many crumbles I’ve baked. It remains one of our absolute favourites, and the recipe is versatile enough to work with almost any fruit in season.

Almost identical to the recipe I watched my mom prepare growing up. It’s a staple for my kitchen now. Our favorite fruits to use are peaches and apricots together, and strawberries also make a great crumble.

My husband made an apple pie with added pears because he did not have enough apples! It was the best ‘apple pie’ he had ever made and it drew many compliments!

If you asked my hubby and oldest son what did I make the most when hubby and I were married near a year they would say, Shake’n Bake.
You see, I’m a diabetic and right after we were married I became pregnant and was very very ill so when I had our youngest son I was so tired and he was a 5wk premie and never slept more than 2hrs so I was very exhausted.
So one day led into another day so I made what they liked but I did it every night for 2wks!!! I finally made it again about 5yrs ago on our 25th anniversary. We had a great laugh!!

Fruit crumbles are always lovely, I think it’s because we use fresh fruit! Our favourites are: Chocolate self-saucing pudding, Apple Cake pudding, sort of sponge with sliced cooked apples which submerge halfway into the cake mixture and a sweet cream sauce over after baking; and a pudding similar to the Malva Pudding but more delicious. Sauce puddings are tops in our house, I want to try a Ginger Sauce pudding soon! A privilege to eat well. Food made with love is always a winner 🙂
Sharon, When I make a crumble (or crisp as it is sometimes called) my mom never & so I don’t cook the fruit before assembling and cooking. The fruit is always cooked sufficiently. Wondering what the difference is and if you know why the two different approaches.

While I love to bake and plan to make this recipe, my family will tell you that what they enjoy most is my meatballs and gravy. The very first time my mother let me mix the meatballs, my family kept on and on about them not knowing I had made them. I felt bad for my mom at the time but ever since for some reason people will rave about them and really, I think they are the reason my husband married me!
It looks as though the pears are D’Anjou, is that correct as I’ve never baked with pears before? Also, which variety of apples do you recommend?
